Cebu Hawk Owl Ninox rumseyi F8.0 1/30 ISO500 @400mm The species was thought to be locally extinct in Cebu by Rabor 1952 and Brooks et al 1995. However, it was re-discover in 1999 by Gonzalez et al 2000 and Paguntalan and Jakosalem 2008 in several sites in Cebu. This species is not a split. This is a new Taxon at the species level that has never before received a valid scientific name. Since this was part of the subspecies spilonota. While Split is when a known, named form within a species is newly recognized as specifically distinct. This new species was unveiled last 17 August 2012 in Cebu, Philippines (PBCFI and PBSP), UK (BirdLife and OBC) and USA (Michigan State University). Cheers, G

Congratulations on your discovery of this Philippine endemic which was thought to be extinct. I hope I do get to see this owl the next time I go to Cebu. Perhaps the next time that it can be seen on a daily basis please let me know. Well done Godo & Mabuhay.
