I just got my camera from the Canon Service Center. In the past I had problems of getting the camera to focus properly. After repeatedly bringing it in for service it was determined that the "Mirror Box Assembly" had to be replaced. I have experience service people especially in the car industry where you are certain that there is something wrong and if they cannot fix it, they would just say that it is normal for the car to be like that. The moment Canon found the defect, they took the bull by the horn so to speak and replace the defective part. I would like to thank the people at the Canon Service Department manned by Wendy Garrido CPS Head, Rommel Pangan Technical Service Head , and Noriel Alejandro Manager of the Service Department for their professional attitude in getting the job done. The next day I went to La Mesa Eco Park and the camera focused very well and here are some of the pictures I took.
Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, Canon EF 800mm f5.6L IS USM, Gitzo GT3530LS tripod, M-3.6 Mongoose Gimbal Action Head. Manual exposure in available light.
I arrived early and set up my gear and waited for the birds to come. The first one that I saw was the Ashy Ground-Thrush (Zoothera cinerea) 192 mm (7 1/2 inches). This bird is endemic to the Philippines. There was just enough opening for me to see the bird as the surroundings were covered with foliage. Although it was still dark the focusing mechanism performed well as it lock its focus with a beep, enabling me to get this picture at 9.07 meters.
1/30 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600
As the bird turned to look at the source of the shutter sound I took another picture as the camera was able to focus fast.
1/30 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600
I saw this Brown Shrike (Lanius tigrinus) 165 mm (6 1/2 inches) for the first time this season as this bird signals the start of the arrival of the migratory birds. I thought it was pulling and eating the leaves of a bush nearby. I moved closer to the bush until I had a good view of the bird and captured the caterpilar on its beak. Thanks to the fast focussing of the camera, I am able to share this picture.
1/200 sec., f/8, ISO 1600
Yummy for the Brown Shrike but there will be one butterfly less next week.
1/200 sec., f/8, ISO 1600
Even if the skittish Lowland White-eye (Zosterops meyeni) 102 mm (4 inches) was at a distance, the camera did not have any focussing problem. I am satisfied with the performance and happy with the result. If the weather continues to improve I will try another place this coming week.
