One of the reasons why I like to go to Coron is because birds are more abundant there than anywhere else that I have been to. There are also more species to find there, than anywhere else that I have been to. Last year I think I went there four times but I have not been able to go yet this year. I am glad that Ramon Quisumbing has decided to invest in the place because it is very promising. There are also a lot of birds that are going to the property that he bought and they will be protected from mischievous kids. If a foreigner will ask me where is the best place to go in the Philippines for birding, I can say without hesitation it is Coron. Here are some pictures of the Grey-throated Bulbul (Alophoixus frater) 227 mm (9 inches) that I have never posted before. The birds appeared from nowhere and almost right on top of me. I was so happy to see them just 11.8 meters from where I was standing. In the past they are too shy and too far away to take a good picture. I am happy to be sharing these pictures because of the way I process them now is so different from the time that I first posted pictures of the same bird about two years ago. Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, Canon EF 800mm f5.6L IS USM, Gitzo GT3530LS tripod, Wimberley WH200 head. Manual exposure in available light. 1/200 sec., f/ 5/6, ISO 1600 1/160 sec., f/ 5/6, ISO 1600

Wonderful photos! This is now known as Palawan Bulbul. Thank you Bob. Would it be correct to call it Palawan Bulbul (Criniger frater) or what is its scientific name?

I have modified this thread and changed the name from Grey-cheeked Bulbul to Grey-throated Bulbul. There was a lively discussion of the name of this bird by Rommel Cruz, Desmond Allan, and Bob Kaufman. It was decided that one of the correct name is Grey-throated Bulbul (Alophoixus frater).

Great photos, sharp and can see the details! Thank you Dennis. The weather forecast for today is good. However the new typhoon with international code name of Bolaven that is approaching looks formidable. At 1470 km east of Northern Luzon and maximum sustained winds of 140 kmph I hope it veers to the right and away from the Philippines.
