On July 15-17, I went to Puerto Princesa, Palawan with my family and did some birding. On the first day, accompanied by superb bird guide Rommel Cruz, we stopped by the Badjao Seafront Restaurant in a beautiful mangrove forest on the edge of the city. Great lunch and very good birding.

STORK-BILLED KINGFISHER (Halcyon capensis gouldi)
An uncommon resident of the Philippines; the gouldi race is endemic to Palawan and Mindoro and is the largest Philippine kingfisher. I watched a pair perched on top of a big mangrove tree, occasionally diving for fish. This was a lifer for me!

MANGROVE BLUE FLYCATCHER (Cyornis rufigastra philippinensis) - Male
A common resident of the Philippines; the philippinensis race is endemic to Palawan and the Visayas. This was a second lifer for me.
F/5.6, ISO-1600, 1/250 second, manual exposure.
We then went to Sabang, Puerto Princesa almost 2 hours drive from the city. This is the jump-off point to the Underground River. We stayed at the new and excellent Sheridan Beach Resort, and had great birding for 2 days.
PIN-STRIPED BABBLER (split from the Striped Tit-Babbler) (Macronus gularis woodi)
The woodi race is endemic to Palawan. This was a third lifer for me. The PSB was quite far, so this is a documentary shot.
F/5.6, ISO-800, 1/800 second, manual exposure.
ASIAN FAIRY-BLUEBIRD (Irena puella tweeddalei) – Male.
The tweeddalei race is endemic to Palawan. This was a fourth lifer for me. I had been wanting to capture this spectacular bird for many years.

SPOT-THROATED FLAMEBACK (split from the Common Flameback) (Dinopium javanense everetti) - Male
The everetti race is endemic to and uncommon in Palawan. This was a fifth lifer for me.
