My company decided to spend some quality time at Buswanga Island, Coron, Palawan, and having seen the various beautiful photos of the birds there uploaded by our excellent bird photographers, I thought a quick detour was in order for some lifers! The Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher (Ceyx erithacus), was my first target - and I got the male and female: Then I spotted the Palawan Blue Flycatcher (Cyornis lemprieri), always shying away from my camera; I had to take a long shot and this image is heavily cropped: Also, a pair of Black-naped Monarchs guarding their nest: Female: Male: Among others, the quite common in Coron, White-vented Shama: My other target bird, the Blue-eared Kingfisher, was a no-show, the Pitas were not so accommodating, and the Tailorbirds and Leafbirds were there, but I only got some documentary shots, at best, so I guess I still have a good reason to go back to that enchanting place! :-) Thanks to Ka Ely for providing me with the bird guide's contact information. All shots were taken with the EOS 60D and 400mm Combo on a tripod using wired remote; optical remote for the nesting Monarchs. I hope you like the photos :-) Best regards, Bobby K.

I can see your smile of contentment with these wonderful captures. The Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher is what is commonly named for this bird in other countries. But ours is a variant and I hope that it will soon be declared as an endemic. They call it Rufous-backed Kingfisher (Ceyx rufidorsa). Well done Bobby & Mabuhay.

Tirso, try to bring another bird photog with you - you will both get more chances as the birds fly from one location to another. Birding alone there makes for many lost opportunities when you have to move your equipment evry now and then and the birds keep going the other way. If two people split up, the birds will most likely be clear to one of you and vice versa. :-)

In spite of your sprint bird photography in Coron you got a bountiful harvest Bobby. More birding to come ...

Thanks Michael, Eric, and Doc Boy! Praise the Lord we still have those beautiful birds to titillate our imaginations and spur us into more birding activities. :-)
