This Slaty-legged Crake is uncommon and must have been quite a thrill to you when you saw it. It seems that the hatchlings of this bird are similar to the rails, crakes, bush hens, and waterhens as they are all black. With the red eyes and head it certainly is a gorgeous looking bird. Well done Neil & Mabuhay.

Thank you sirs! It was a very exciting encounter (as you can clearly tell from the blurred/OOF photos of the chicks). I know I should be using a tripod but I don't think I would have been able to get any shots off. For now, I'm happy with not-so-sharp photos rather than none at all.

Wow!! Beautiful shots! We once drove quite far (from Alabang to Tarlac!) to to see that bird. You're doing great over there, keep it up! It's always interesting to see what you'll come up with next!

Your chance encounters with the wonderful birds in your area would surely make any birder (bird watcher or bird photographer) happy. I know I would be :-)
I would gladly have shots like these than nothing at all. You are truly blessed out there Neil.
Looking forward to seeing more of your posts.
