I was out of Cebu most of the time since last year. This gave me little opportunity to visit our favorite wetlands in Olango island. The photos and tales from visiting birders and photographers in Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS) recently have given me more reason to revisit this place.
Unlike my past trips here, the Olango visit yesterday was made with hardly any preparations which gave us little time to explore the usual birding spots there.
Despite the lack of preparations, we were able to see good number of waders some in their summer plumage with very minimal effort, . I got these cropped photos/distant shots of Asian Dowitchers again with very minimal effort and time in the field (about an hour).
Note: For first time visitors at Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary, you can access a short article I wrote for the WBCP newsletter (eBON) last year posted in this link: ebonph.wordpress.com/category/october-2011/ The staff/wardens stationed in the nature center of OIWS should be able to help/facilitate a productive trip for first time and even returning visitors.
Thank you for viewing.

It is always nice to see a bird in breeding plumage. It is like they are wearing their formal attire. Thank you for sharing Nilo and Mabuhay.

Nice breeding colors Sir Nilo! Missed this one yesterday. Cheers! Yes, I told the guys in Olango that you are suppose to join us. Anyway, don't worry I think we still have a few days before the major flocks starts moving up north...

Agree Ely... and most of them are not only changing attire but are noticeably bulkier (possibly due to stored fat) in preparation for their long northward migration.

As of yesterday they are in a flock of 19 birds with 17 in breeding plumage or approaching it. They have paired off now (8 Pairs + 2 1st year birds. They allow very close approach and if flushed will actually fly around you then land just in front of you.
