To the best of my recollection this is the closest that I have photographed a bird with the 800 mm lens. Minimum focusing distance is 6 meters. I took these pictures at 6.08 meters. The Red-keeled Flowerpecker (Dicaeum australe) is endemic to the Philippines. It was raining that afternoon and for a while I thought there were not going to be any birds until I heard it chirping very loud on the Aratelis tree. It likes to feed on the fruit of the Aratelis tree. The bird was literally wet & wild so it was difficult but challenging to take his picture. Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, Canon EF 800mm f5.6L IS USM, Gitzo GT3530LS tripod, Wimberley WH200 head. Manual exposure in available light. All the pictures were taken at 1/250 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600 at 6.08 meters.

Nice and close indeed Ely. Your macro makes it look like a big bird! Good DOF control with your 5.6 opening.
We planted an Aratelis tree in our backyard to attract this bird. So far two birds have landed already. But no pictures yet.

Wonderfully detailed, Ely. Only an X-ray will reveal more! Thank you Ramon. I don't think I can do any closer or better than this. Really lucky to get that close as I was already looking for him under the tree and the bird just landed underneath me. Lucky too that it focus fast enough before it started to jump to another branch.

So far two birds have landed already. But no pictures yet. Thank you Tonji. There was a lot of luck in getting in this picture. The Aratelis tree will attract a lot of nice birds in Alabang. I don't know if the flowers will also attract the Sunbirds. If the birds don't eat the fruits, they are also good to eat. I use to eat them off the tree but they are nicer when you chill them in the refrigerator for a few minutes.

Thank you Toto. That is a nice adjective to use. We like chicharon because it is crispy and we also like our pictures to be crispy. LOL.

Beautiful detail, very nice Ely T.,!!. Thank you Tateo. My favorite distance to subject is to be within 10 meters. For bigger birds maybe up to 15 meters would be ideal.

Look at the feather details !!! Amazing :-) Thank you Tina. For birds this size, I would be very happy if they are within 10 meters. At 6.05 meters I am just glad that I was able to focus on this small & skittish bird.
