Last Friday, while birding in Tan Phu forest in Vietnam, my bird guide Quang heard and then spotted a pair of Black-and-Red Broadbills ( Cymbirhynchus macrorhynchos), which are becoming uncommon in Vietnam - a lifer for me. ;D It was very difficult to see them, much less photograph them, because we were in the bright sunlight and they were constantly moving and staying in the dense, dark understorey of the forest about 30-40 meters away. They would not let us come closer. I took more than 30 photos, but only 2 had good details. I was shocked when I saw the photos in my laptop - because the Broadbills look like cartoon characters! I did not adjust the Contrast at all and only did minimal Saturation, and yet the birds look like they were painted onto the screen. These were the stars of my birding trip! Canon 1D Mark IV camera, Canon 800 mm lens, tripod with half-gimbal head. I did not think that if I used the 1.4x teleconverter, the camera would have focused on the birds because of the dense and dark understorey. F/5.6, ISO-800, 1/320 second. F/5.6, ISO-800, 1/640 second.

You did the right thing by not using the 1.4 TC. It is unimaginable for me to see that there are such beautiful birds in this world. I am happy for you that you were able to nail this. Congratulations. Well done Ramon & Mabuhay.
