Got a chance to go out last weekend and I was able to spot this colorful Acorn Woodpecker from San Gerardo. All shots taken using 7D plus 400mm f/5.6 lens @ ISO 400

This bird looks so good with the red cap. The first picture is a female and the second picture is a male. I think this is one time that the female looks more colorful than the male. The dark feathers of the temple of the female crosses to the other side separating the red feathers from the white. The male does not have those feathers running across. I like your pictures. Well done Ariel & Mabuhay.

Thanks Alain! The only thing though is that I do not know a thing about how to process these from Photoshop. I only use Canon's DPP in all my pictures. Regards.

Wow, very clear captures of a spectacular woodpecker, Ariel. You must have gotten very close to it. Congrats! Thanks Ramon. I was shooting very close at around 5mts. Wow, only 5 meters away! The birds in Costa Rica must be well-protected to be so tame and unafraid of humans. I wish it was that way here in the Phils.

I wish it was that way here in the Phils. Yes, Ramon. There is a heavy penalty for humans who kill animals. Also, the people realizes that the bird tour business is huge here and helps the economy. When I was in Manila, I felt that my lens was very short because I couldn't even get any decent shots of huge waterbirds from Candaba. Here, your 800mm perhaps is more than enough. Regards.

Ariel, How very curious. I was not aware that the female of certain races of formicivorus had that little red zone under the white of the throat. I checked some sources and the females of several races, including this one - striatipectus, have it. It is just the first time that I noticed it. Live and learn. Good shots.
