Some shots of male Gadwall taken today at the Sevenoaks Reserve in Kent, UK. Only a degree above zero at the time with ice having formed in some parts of the lake which can be seen on the bottom left of the first pic more easily than in the others.Saw my first Bittern also but too distant for more than record shots. Canon 7D, 400 mm 5.6L on tripod from a hide. IMG_2462 Gadwall by Mick Harris, on Flickr IMG_2442 Gadwall by Mick Harris, on Flickr IMG_2450 Gadwall by Mick Harris, on Flickr

Thanks Ramon. Yes it was quite cold and sitting still in a hide waiting for a Bittern to show is not a warming activity so I was glad to have a walk around in the sun (weak though it was) afterwards and take a few shots around the reserve. We've had 3 inches of snow overnight, our first (and hopefully the last) so some snow clearing to do.
Happy birding
Mick

It seems like the snow came late as spring is just around the corner. It is amazing how the feathers of the duck is sufficient to prevent the duck from freezing. Good shots of the Gadwall. Well done Mick, Cheers & Mabuhay.
