The batanis race is slightly larger and brighter than meyeni. I think this race is only found around the Batanes area. LOWLAND WHITE EYE Zosterops meyeniBatan, Batanes, Philippines 1/160 f7.1

I will bet that you were no more than 10 meters from this bird. What a beautiful capture of both the front and the back. Well done Tonji & Mabuhay.

Beautiful back shot! How close were you to the LWE?
How is the birding in Batanes?

Thanks Ely. I can't remember how far I was from the bird but it was probably close. If you look at the first pic the DOF is pretty thin even at f7.1.
Lowland White Eyes are a favorite of mine. There are a lot of them here in Alabang and I practiced with them a lot when I was just starting.

Thanks Clemn!
Thanks Mick, I just started reading the forum again and I noticed your post about your gear getting lost. Yikes.

Ramon, I was probably pretty close. We had just checked into the hotel when a big flock of these birds landed on a tree. We wanted to get good pictures of these birds because they are a new race to us. Sylvia and I got to take a lot of photos. Regarding Batanes I wrote an article for EBon about Batanes. Ebon is the online newsletter of the WBCP. There is a video in the article which may be helpful. Here is the link: ebonph.wordpress.com/category/newsletter/december-2011-january-2012/

Very sharp photo of the bird. These photos could be about 10meter distance.

Thanks William, yes maybe around that distance. It was a smallish tree not that high. The White Eyes there are very common and it is not hard to photograph them.
Thanks Rey, with White Eyes it seems especially important to get the eye details well, hehe. The name of the bird will draw attention to the eyes.
