i was in davao for some work last sunday and had time to visit the Philippine Eagle Center yesterday. i still didn't see the silvery kingfishers, which was my target for the trip and surprisingly didn't see a single orange belied flowerpecker. sharing some birds captured from the trip. purple throated sunbird Untitled by gabsbuluran, on Flickr Camera Nikon D300S Exposure 0.004 sec (1/250) Aperture f/7.1 Focal Length 400 mm ISO Speed 800 gimbal support Untitled by gabsbuluran, on Flickr Camera Nikon D300S Exposure 0.003 sec (1/320) Aperture f/7.1 Focal Length 400 mm ISO Speed 800 gimbal support Orange tufted Spiderhunter juvenile Untitled by gabsbuluran, on Flickr Camera Nikon D300S Exposure 0.017 sec (1/60) Aperture f/7.1 Focal Length 400 mm ISO Speed 1000 gimbal support Orange tufted spider hunter - adult Untitled by gabsbuluran, on Flickr Camera Nikon D300S Exposure 0.01 sec (1/100) Aperture f/5.6 Focal Length 400 mm ISO Speed 640 gimbal support red keeled flowerpecker Untitled by gabsbuluran, on Flickr Camera Nikon D300S Exposure 0.005 sec (1/200) Aperture f/7.1 Focal Length 230 mm (my lens must have crept on me!!!) Very interesting! The first two photos are of a male Purple throated Sunbird apparently intermediate between the yellow breasted ssp juliae and the red-breasted ssp trochilus. The next two are of the Mindanao Little Spiderhunter split recently to be Orange-tufted Spiderhunter, a Philippine endemic. The first one is a juvenile, the second is an adult.

The Purple-throated Sunbird is one of the toughest birds to get a good shot because of the colors. I like the second one. Well done Gabs and Mabuhay.

Beautiful capture of the purple throated sunbird, Gabs. I never saw these birds when I went there last summer.

thanks ely! add to that, the skittish nature of this little fellow and its knack for staying inside the shrubbery for cover.
doc william, i was actually surprised by this one. it was feeding mixed with the OBS. i found them in the area where the rows of sea eagle cages are.

Gabriel, about what time of the day did you see these birds at the Davao Phil. Eagle Center? I assume you got in after the gate opened to the public? Thanks.
