After a long while, I was able to go out once again and went to nearby Unibersidad Para La Paz (University for Peace). Unlike during summer season, there isn't much to photographed except with some few surprises. Pale-billed Woodpecker - I once photographed this specie inside Carara National Park but I was surprised to see a pair this for the first time inside the Unibersidad. 7D, 400mm, f/5.6, 1/640s, ISO 500 7D, 400mm, f/8.0, 1/160s And the most surprising of all is the presence of this beautiful Keel-billed Toucan! I heard its familiar call from afar and was able to locate where it was coming from. But this is the only decent shot I got before the pair flew away. Neverthless, I was still satisfied and happy to know that this specie can now be found closer to home ISO 640, shot taken more thatn 20mts away

The Pale-billed Woodpecker has a bill like the color of our nails. Would you know the number of species and endemics Costa Rica has? In the Philippines the figure is about 600+ species and 200+ endemics.
The Keel-billed Toucan looks like a bird in the cartoons. They are so colorful and beautiful. How can a bird have a bill shape like a lobster claw and so much bigger than its head. Really remarkable. I remember you saying something before that you have photograph most of them if not all of them. Must be a nice collection to have on the wall.
Well done Ariel & Mabuhay.

Thanks Ely and Neon. According to records Costa Rica has more than 850 species of birds, more than US and Canada combined. There are six toucan species listed in my book and I am very fortunate to photographed five of these already. Below are the other species so far that I have photograped. Fiery-billed Aracari Emerald Toucanet Chesnut Mandibled Toucan Collared Aracari

850 is a lot of birds. No wonder people like to go there because there are so many colorful birds to be seen. Beautiful set of pictures of the different kind of Toucans. I hope you get to photograph the remaining Toucan that you have not yet seen.
