Just curious, why do the chicks seem to have their mouths always open? Are they calling for their mum? Or screaming "Foooooood!"?

Whenever the mama or papa pied bushchats are away, the chicks are really quiet and then as soon as the mama or papa pied bushchat is near, they chirp to their hearts content - probably celebrating that there's food coming soon ;D

Went back again last April 20 to check on the Pied Bushchat chicks and to our horror - the nest was empty !!! We were thinking that maybe the chicks were eaten by something and thennnnn we saw Mama Pied Bushchat carrying something in her beak so we watched were she was going and lo and behold, there was a small wing flapping by the grass where the mama bushchat went. All of a sudden Manny saw one chick that seems to have fallen from the nest - JP decided to get it so that he can put it near the other chicks otherwise the ants might eat it since it cannot fly yet. Manny had to transfer the chick again to where the new nest is because it was about to fall off a ravine again. When Manny put down the youngest chick we saw 2 of the nestlings fly a little to a place very near the nest. We were so happy coz the family is back together again - Haaaay what a day Here are some photos of the youngest one that fell off the nest.

Thanks Rey. This event alone perked up our kinda frustrating birding day and what a "high" it was to witness something like this and the feeling of knowing that you helped the birds in some way so that life can move on more smoothly for the pied bushchat family

wow! what a story Tina and great shots to boot!! I only hear mom is taking care of the three, what happened to dad? Usually the third chick is just an insurance if something happens to the first two, but the first two are strong and healthy so the third one is left to fend for itself, usually it can't fly as much as the other two fledglings as it hatched quite late, so it is left out and dies. It is not as strong as the others to go from place to place to hide. Normally only one chick survives to maturity.

The papa bushchat is regularly there too Neon. Good thing is that both parents help out in looking after the young. I just hope the 3 chicks survive to adulthood.
