Hoffmann's Woodpecker, Melanerpes hoffmannii, is a resident breeding bird from southern Honduras south to Costa Rica. It is a common species on the Pacific slopes, locally as high as 2150 m. It is expanding on the Caribbean slope, aided by deforestation. This is further facilitated by its tendency to wander about outside the breeding season (source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoffmann's_Woodpecker)EOS 7D, 400mm, f/5.6. 1/100s ISO 400 And here's the shot showing its barred back. Nice capture of the Woodpecker which has similar back feathers with our Philippine Woodpecker. The red crown makes it stand out. Was this taken near your place? Well done Ariel & Mabuhay.

This was taken somewhere in the south but is very common all over the country. I used to see this specie in the old place where we used to live.
