I was supposed to do some errands but for some unknown force ended up in UPD today.
I was walking towards my friends house when I noticed the favorite flower of the sunbird on my previous visits were mostly on the road. The freshness of the flower also added to my curiosity, as the flowers would have wilted first if the sunbird was feeding on it, but I moved on.
Later when I was sitting and taking to my friend I heard a colasisi on the tree just above us and saw it fly to the tree where the flowers were on the road. I immediately went to the tree and see if I can locate the bird. I saw it and went to my car to get my quick draw gear and this is what I got.
Philippine Hanging-Parrot "Colasisi" (Loriculus philippensis) UPD June 1, 2011
5DM2 + 300 f4 IS + 1.4x Sigma TC, f 5.6, 1/400 sec, ISO 500, Manual exposure on available light, Hand held, 3.8m distance, Corrected for blue and purple fringing.
Found out later that this bird was responsible for the fresh flowers on the pavement. But still wondering how this bird learn to feed on an exotic flower like this, plucking it with its beak at the base, reversing it using a foot to hold it and twist it around and sip from the other end. It went from flower to flower by just walking along the branches, it was an amazing site to just watch this bird and how it figured out how to feed on a new food source.
