Hello birdnuts, I went to UP yesterday (May 5, 2011) to practice and also to check out the fruiting trees that are frequented by our feathered friends. The fig tree (or balete) in MSI is full of ripe fruits and that is where I got this barbet. Maybe a good spot also to wait for the Chestnut-cheeked Starling and if you haven't got enough shots of yellow-vented bulbuls. ;D The Lowland White-eye tree near Vargas is also in-bloom so lots of white-eyes there now. This is also the spot where I got the Nightjar. No more Oriental Cuckoo but in the same area there is a pair of nesting Collared Kingfishers in their termite mound nest. No pics though, just observed them from a distance. A lot of immature birds nowadays. And I noticed they are not camera-shy yet. I like the colorful Barbet and the Lowland White-eye which I believe is endemic. Thank you for the update. Well done Adri & Mabuhay.

Did you just say Chestnut-cheeked Starlings? ;D Time to stake-out MSI I guess.
Lovely set, Adri. Interesting to see a young long-tailed Shrike since I haven't seen one before.

I second Bob on the immature Long-tailed Shrike. This may be the first shot of the Philippine subspecies.

thanks everyone! hi des! i have tons of pics for the immature long-tailed shrike! i think i was able to take a picture from different angles? would you like to us to make a paper from this? just let me know! the two immatures were bothering the adult non-stop for food, most of time hanging their wings down and flapping them continuously. i would have taken a video but no recorder with me. i think plain Master Tina Mallari has pictures of the immature too.
