While filming some scenes and doing interviews with the Philippine Dragon Boat team at Manila bay last January, i noticed some shore birds busily scavenging for food on a junked boat at a distance. Since i was at there for work, all i had was a short lens, an 80-200. But the sight of birds at human visual range triggered my shutter finger, and i just had to try to photograph them. So armed with a short lens and some practical bird-stalking-experience, i hid behind rocks and junked boats, till i got a couple of meters close to them, and here are my captures. All shots photographed with Nikon D300s + Nikkor 80-200 2.8 average settings, iso250, f2.8-3.5, 1/1000 sec, cropped. Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos)

Very nice captures JV. Very fine field craft technique in getting near to these birds, long lens not needed. Btw, this looks like a Common Sandpiper to me JV.

A great set of shots. The first two are my favourites because of the dark background

Thanks Mick! These were photographed during noontime, so getting the correct exposure on subject relatively resulted to a darker background, which worked well for high contrast picture! Cheers!

The first one is my favorite. I also like the third with the bird's reflection. WOW!

Those are great shots, JV. I am very much encouraged. I should try shooting coastal birds every now and then with my 300mm as Ralph Nabong has suggested. Thanks for sharing, JV. telyds

Thanks Eric! A real Ninja outfit with bonnet would have actually allowed me to get a few more feet closer to them!

Thanks Telyds! Try visiting the Manila Bay area right beside the parking lot of CCP, that's where i shot these pics. They were there the whole morning, and they didnt seem too bothered by the presence of people from around a 10-15 meter distance.

Thanks Enrique, but i'd rather shoot more relaxed from a distance with a longer lens!... Congrats, certified Birdnut!

I also like the first 2 shots! The plain dark background plus detail on the perch adds oomph to the picture!
