These past few days, a mixed flock of Chestnut and Scaly-breasted Munias composed of adults and immatures have been visiting the vacant lot near my house to feed on the overgrown grasses. This presents an excellent opportunity for me to get close to these birds, as I can use a concrete fence to hide my approach. My glass of choice for this job is the medium range 100-400 IS for the close focusing distance, light weight and IS. ;D Chesnut Munia ( Lonchura atricapilla) 40D + 100-400 L IS, 400 mm, f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/160 sec, manual exposure, hand held Chesnut Munia ( Lonchura atricapilla, immature, provisional ID ) 40D + 100-400 L IS, 400 mm, f/5.6, ISO 250, 1/500 sec, manual exposure, hand held Scaly-Breasted Munia ( Lonchura punctulata) 40D + 100-400 L IS, 400 mm, f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/200 sec, manual exposure, hand held And a processed 100% crop of the above. I focused on the shoulder but at 400 mm, f/5.6 and about 12 feet distance, the DOF is very shallow and the eye is just about to go out of the zone of critical sharpness.

Superb feather details on the Scaly-Breasted Munia, Sir Romy. If you don't mind, was it sharpened?

Superb feather details on the Scaly-Breasted Munia, Sir Romy. If you don't mind, was it sharpened? Yes, Mark.... the 100% crop is already processed, and that includes sharpening on the subject and NR on the background.
