Nice capture of the Lesser Coucal in flight. Were there other birds in the area?

Very nice catch Doc, looks like a coucal to me too, a Lessser subadult. Thanks, Rey. Is it not that lesser coucals have dark colored feathers on their napes? ???I based this on our photographic guide.

Nice capture of the Lesser Coucal in flight. Were there other birds in the area? Thanks Ely. There were a lot of ducks but quite far. I also saw a flock of stilts (hundreds), too far to take a photo though. I got a buzzard in flight, I think it is Eurasian buzzard. I did not go to where the geese are, since I had limited time and I was just showing the place to my son to stimulate his interest to birding. Of course the common ones (i.e. bittern, herons, grebe) were there.

Thank you William for the information. But Candaba always springs a surprise every now and than. Let us wish that there will be enough rain on the next rainy season, in the Candaba area to fill the ponds with water as it happens almost every year. This will make the overgrown foliage drown and we will be able to see more ducks at a closer distance.

The adults are black with rufous wings, very similar to Philippine Coucal (and others), but the juvenile has this beautiful streaking that you've captured. No other juvenile Coucal in The Philippines has this plumage in the juvenile. The habitat is also wrong for the only other Coucals on Luzon which are both restricted to forest habitats.
