First time for me to post on this sub-forum Hopefully not the last Went to Singapore for training on a Saturday and Sunday. But my flight was Monday late afternoon. Luckily I had my birding gear with me so I went to the Chinese and Japanese Gardens White vented Mynah - these guys were everywhere!!! Am posting this one as it shows the white vent. Camera Nikon D90 Exposure 0.003 sec (1/320) Aperture f/8.0 Focal Length 400 mm ISO Speed 200 Handheld here is a cropped close up of the same species. The eyes remind me of a BMW (taken at the Pasir Ris train station. Camera Nikon D90 Exposure 0.017 sec (1/60) Aperture f/4.8 Focal Length 120 mm ISO Speed 320 Handheld

The Pied Fantails there were different. A lot smaller, the Black color is not as black as the ones we have here but just as skittish! Pied Fantail Camera Nikon D90 Exposure 0.017 sec (1/60) Aperture f/8.0 Focal Length 400 mm ISO Speed 200 handheld

I spotted this guy and was unsure of the ID at first as the White areas of the body is too large (I thought) to be just the throat. White-throated Kingfisher Camera Nikon D90 Exposure 0.003 sec (1/320) Aperture f/8.0 Focal Length 400 mm ISO Speed 200 Handheld

If you get to the far end of the Japanese Garden, this guy is hard to miss because of its size. Stork-billed Kingfisher Camera Nikon D90 Exposure 0.005 sec (1/200) Aperture f/5.6 Focal Length 400 mm ISO Speed 200 handheld

this last one is not a bird.. I was stalking a wader (I think it was a sandpiper) when I heard something in the bushes behind me. It was this guy.. a good 7feet long head to tail and it scared the living daylights out of me for a split second. I did think of buying a nice monitor in SG but this monitor wasn't what I had in mind. Monitor Lizard Camera Nikon D90 Exposure 0.004 sec (1/250) Aperture f/8.0 Focal Length 400 mm ISO Speed 200 Handheld (in the prone position ) Thanks for looking guys!!!! C&C is encouraged.

Hi Edu, This is the juvenile of the PF, which looks very much like the Thai ones. The Thai adults are as dark and as big as the Philippine variety, but with a thinner supercilium ("eyebrow"). Here are my shots for comparison: birdphotoph.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=worldbirds&action=display&thread=6544Happy shooting! E

Thank you Enrique for the additional info. I also see they loose that reddish brown bar on the wings.

Thank you Enrique for the additional info. I also see they loose that reddish brown bar on the wings. Yes, they do lose the brown feather edges as they mature. The shot to get is the spread tail (fan tail, after all!) pose - they move so fast though! - E

Congratulations on conquering the Chinese & Japanese Garden favorites. It looks like the Monitor almost got your behind thinking you were something delicious. Good harvest. Well done Edu. Mabuhay.

@enrique, +1 on them moving so fast. Although the pic I posted is not that good, I consider it a small trophy, catching a Pied Fantail at 1/60 @sir Ely, it was so fulfilling for me as birding with a full set of luggage is an incredible challenge! That lizard followed me around actually and almost made me cut my trip short. its a good thing it got its hands on a large fish that kept it busy.

thank you, evanjohn. Am glad you appreciate them. Yes the mynahs in SG are not shy at all and with their white spot under the wings, I also thought they were crested mynahs at first.
