This was also one of the birds I really wanted to see in Mt. Kitanglad. During the Bird Fair in Davao, Nicky showed us the full frame with a point and shoot that he took of this bird and we decided right there and then to go to Mt. Kitanglad during our son's next school break! This individual was in the trees just outside the lodge. When we heard it calling, we followed Nicky out into the muddy trail, in the dark to find this bird. We decided to use our big lenses to get good detail. It was very narrow and there was no place to use our tripods so we handheld our rigs. I had a hard time hand holding my rig plus the flash and flash bracket. My arms were shaking after a few shots and I had to rest the camera on Nicky's shoulder! We used manual focus for these shots because AF would not work in the dark. Philippine Frogmouth Batrachostomus septimusMy picture - I wanted to show the huge beak of this bird Canon 7d+300 2.8+1.4tc, 580EX2, flash bracket, hand held f4.5, iso160, 1/250, aperture priority -2/1EV, manual focus Tonji's picture - you can see the tail clearly here Canon 5dMk2+500, 580EX2, better beamer, hand held f6.3, iso320, 1/200, manual exposure, manual focus

Under those conditions you & Tonji were able to get good pictures of the Frogmouth. Well done Sylvia & Tonji. Mabuhay.

Thank you for all the wonderful comments! I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. It was such a thrill to see and photograph this bird. Amazing and memorable experience! Even our not really a birder son went out with us in the muddy woods in the dark to see this amazing bird.
Conrad -- I first found out about this bird from when I saw a picture Godo posted a while back of a Frogmouth in the daytime, front view. It looked like a muppet. I wasn't even so sure if it was a real bird or a stuffed toy! So glad I got to see one in real life!
