Hi! These pictures were taken at Simply Butterflies in Bilar, Bohol on September 19, 2010. 1. Is this a Pygmy Flowerpecker? 2. Is this an immature Red Keeled Flowerpecker? Tonji is 100% sure it is, but I'm not sure. In the Kennedy guide, it says the immature have black bills and legs. Do they really start out with plain chests and acquire the "red keel" as they get older? There were adult Red Keeled Flowerpeckers in the same tree. 3. Another view. Immature Red Keeled Flowerpecker? Thank you for viewing!

I agree with Tonji. Yes they don't have red keels to start with, and they do have a 2 tone bill. The bird to be careful with on Bohol is the Buzzing Flowerpecker, which has a similar pattern to this bird. If this bird is exactly the same shape as the adult RKFPs I would go with that though.

Thanks Paolo.
Thanks Des. What about the bird in the first picture? Is it also a RKFP?

Sorry, no. That is a Pygmy, as you say.

whatever flowerpeckers they are, these are all great shots mam Sylvia! I have experienced taking photos of both the Red keeled and the Pygmy and although they are a bit "predictable" they are incredibly skittish!
