Camera Canon EOS-1D Mark IV Exposure 0.001 sec (1/1250) Aperture f/5.6 Focal Length 800 mm ISO Speed 1000 Exposure Bias +8/3 EV Support: Tripod + Gimbal Location: Cavite The Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus intermedius), also known as the Red-backed Sea-eagle, is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards and harriers. They are found in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and Australia. They are found mainly on the coast and in inland wetlands where it feeds on dead fish and other prey. Adults have a reddish brown plumage and a contrasting white head and breast which makes them easy to distinguish from other birds of prey but immatures can be confused with a buzzard. The Brahminy Kite is distinctive and contrastingly coloured, with chestnut plumage except for the white head and breast and black wing tips. The juveniles are browner, but can be distinguished from both the resident and migratory races of Black Kite in Asia by the paler appearance, shorter wings and rounded tail. The pale patch on the underwing carpal region is of a squarish shape and separated from Buteo buzzards. The Brahminy Kite is about the same size as the Black Kite and has a typical kite flight, with wings angled, but its tail is rounded unlike the Milvus species, Red Kite and Black Kite, which have forked tails. The two genera are however very close. The call is a mewing keeyew Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brahminy_Kite

Night flight shot, Paolo!
BTW, the scientific name of this bird based on our online guide (Clements) and on the Kennedy Guide is Haliastur indus, and the race ranging here is intermedius, hence the full scientific name is Haliastur indus intermedius.
When posting, I suggest that we stick to the naming convention based on our online guide or on the KG to avoid confusion.

Thanks Romy. I read on Wikipedia that there is a Philippine-specific Kite so wanted to identify it as such. Corrected Latin designation. Nice shots, Pao. You seem to have gotten the hang of shooting raptors in flight.

Thanks Mark! I hope to improve as time passes. At the moment I barely scratch the surface of the advances of the new body and still treat it like an 40D & 5D Mark II. Camera Canon EOS-1D Mark IV Exposure 0.001 sec (1/2000) Aperture f/6.3 Focal Length 800 mm ISO Speed 640 Exposure Bias +2 EV Support: Tripod + Gimbal Location: Cavite Really wish the sky was not overcast and the bird was not back lit.
