hi' i noticed some "dust" on the inner side of the front element of my Sigma 150-500mm. a while a go i emailed dp_online for cleaning and they replied that the risk of exposing the lens for more dust is present when the lens is open. any suggestion for the care of the lens? renoir

If at all, a heavy coat of dust in the inner elements might reduce the contrast a bit. Here's a quick exercise to convince you that it isn't a problem - shoot any scene with your camera + 150-500 with a ballpen or pencil or even one of your fingers directly in front of the lens. Now, shoot the same scene without the obstruction. Do you see a significant difference in IQ? I tend to agree with DP Online, and would discourage you from the unnecessary servicing or cleaning. Instead, I'd postpone the lens cleaning until such a time that I need to send the lens for servicing of another major issue that might require dismantling the lens. While in lens hospital, you can also ask them to clean the elements, in addition to solving the other major issue. Now, if the inner elements have fungus-like deposits instead of benign dust, that's a different matter which will require immediate servicing.
