Another joint post from me and Tonji! We took these pictures these past 2 nights with a flashlight. The snipe was a first for us in Alabang! I was able to use auto-focus once the flashlight was turned on. Tonji had to use manual focus. We took turns holding the flashlight while the other person took pictures. At one point, we even had a security guard holding the flashlight for us! Tina also joined us for part of our night birding. We didn't shine the flashlight too long on the birds so they wouldn't get stressed. We were able to id the Savanna Nightjar by the call. We are not sure about the Snipe species. It could be a Pintail Snipe or a Swinhoe's Snipe. Great shots Syl! The boys and I were looking for nightjars the other evening. I learned so much in terms of adopting what technologies you have towards birding. Now I have to figure out how to make my iPhone accept songs again.

Glad you guys find this interesting. They are not the perfect shots but we don't even use flash, just flash lights. Hehe. Night birding is interesting because its nice to see the birds doing their thing, feeding, flying and hopping around at night. Because of the high chance of not seeing anything the cooler full of beer helps keep up the cheer while waiting in the dark. Maybe the aroma of the peanuts may also help draw them closer, haha. I think the nightjar is the 49th bird we have photographed in our village. The snipe is the 50th bird we have photographed in Alabang. Ok so now I am hoping a Luzon Bleeding heart shows up. Finding new birds in your "backyard" is always so cool. For those interested in the 7D here is an interesting discovery. It can AF using the light thrown by our flashlight. Wow. Getting jealous of my wife's rig. A night focusing camera with a 2.8 opening.
