I had a short date yesterday with a Canon 7D courtesy of Canon Phil. at U.P. to check the 7D AF and noise handling capability. The guard on duty helped in looking for a suitable subject for my field test. He saw this Phil. Scops Owl perched atop a bamboo tree. Philippine Scops Owl (Otus megalotis) Canon 7D, Canon 500mm F/4, Canon wired remote, Tripod mounted Subject distance - 7.63m, ISO 320, 1/15 sec. @ f/8.0

It looks like the Scops Owl is a shy bird. He hides behind the branches and peeps in between them to see what you are trying to do. If only he knows that we bird photographers mean no harm and would just like to take their picture maybe they would be more cooperative. Nevertheless you were able to take a clear picture. Well done Bong. Mabuhay.

Interesting photo Ralf. What is your observation about the buttons of the 7D as compared to your 1D3?

Nice shot of hiding Owl Bong. How do you find the AF? How about the noise levels in the shadows?

Thank you Ely, Paolo, Rey & Idol Romy! @ Paolo - Not much difference in the button positions except for the additional buttons, especially the AF buttons. @ Rey - AF is fast even on busy FG/BG, but the noise is something else (comparing to 5D2 & 1D3).

Owls are super cool. Its great to see them during the day. Great test for the 7D.
Ralf I agree, the 7D has super AF. But 5D Mk2 is much cleaner. Its similar to 50D with regards to noise. I hope the new 5D Mk3 has the 7D AF, Hehe.

Thanks Tonji! I'll be happy if Canon will improve the AF in the next firmware upgrade for the 5DII!
