I got close to some avian regulars at the Coastal Lagoon of Manila Bay this afternoon, and a 2x TC on the 7D + 400 2.8 allowed me to fill the frame in most shots. Here's the first one I processed, the bright dot in the bird's eye was the setting sun, while the BG was OOF seawater. Collared Kingfisher ( Todiramphus chloris) Shooting info - Coastal Lagoon, Manila Bay, March 9, 2010, 7D + 400 2.8 IS + Canon 2x TC, 800 mm, f/7.1, ISO 400, 1/160 sec, manual exposure in available light, bean bag, uncropped full frame resized to 1500x1000, 9.76 m shooting distance

Thanks, Neon and Ariel! I was eyeing this next one while it was feeding along the rocks near the water. I was a bit too close and I was alternately shooting landscape and portrait, depending on the bird's pose. I got lucky to get this capture when the bird's stance was more or less ideally suited to fit the frame. ;D Little Egret ( Egretta garzetta) Shooting info - Coastal Lagoon, Manila Bay, March 9, 2010, 7D + 400 2.8 IS + Canon 2x TC, 800 mm, f/8, ISO 200, 1/320 sec, manual exposure in available light, bean bag, uncropped full frame resized to 1500x1000, 20.4 m shooting distance

The Kingfisher and Little Egret pictures are exactly the kind of pictures that I like to take. I am glad that you shared these pictures. Seeing them makes me realize that I am still far away from my goal. It looks like the Little Egret legs are molting as the black changes to green or vice versa. I am keeping this thread on a separate file to remind me that I have to work harder on my pictures. Well done Romy. Mabuhay.

Thanks, Ely, Gabs and Ixi! This one, a different CKF individual from the first photo, is not quite full frame. With guilt, I've to crop out some pixels to improve the composition. Thanks, Ixi, Mark and Bong!!! I was not able to bird for several weeks prior to this short visit to Coastal Lagoon, so I'm savoring the processing of my captures pixel-by-tiny-pixel. Here's a favorite of mine from the sortie, I think the soft lighting (thin clouds covered the setting sun) was flattering to the plumage of this bird. The background was again out of focus sea water. Common Sandpiper ( Actitis hypoleucos) Shooting info - Coastal Lagoon, Manila Bay, March 9, 2010, 7D + 400 2.8 IS + Canon 2x TC, 800 mm, f/6.3, ISO 400, 1/250 sec, manual exposure in available light, bean bag, near full frame resized to 1500x1000, 13.1 m shooting distance

Thanks, Boy, Toto and William! Among the 3 or 4 CKFs I've seen near the container van, this one has the cleanest plumage and least damaged bill. Great set. The Egret catches my eye the most. But they are all great shots.
That 400 2.8 plus 2x and 7D combo seems to be your new favorite.
