Went to Subic last weekend with a photographer friend who wants to try out bird photography and birds are just too scarce out there. Was lucky though that Tina Mallari got to pass our way. Too glad to have finally met the Plain Idol in person, she gave me pointers on how to get to the Bee Eater colony. Perhaps sensing that I dont know the area after she left us ( ;D ) , I got a text message of the general direction of the Colony. The Plain Idol of this forum never cease to amaze everyone not only with her great photos of the lovely birds. The resourcefulness of someone to get the number of a new acquaintance whom you happen to crossed path in a forest from perhaps another buddy is just astonishing. This is perhaps why Tina is called the Plain Idol. Here is the only bird that I got to photograph decently from a weekend trip to Subic. The Plain Idol was our day saver. To Tina, big big thanks! Without you, we could have went home frustrated. Blue-Throated Bee Eater, Subic Canon 50D, EF 400mm f5.6L, Manfrotto 755XB/Gimbal Shot @ f5.6, 1/400", ISO160 Here is a series of a blurred sequence of a late Valentine between two bee eaters. I am not sure though if they're on mere sweetnothings or arguing on who's gonna take care of the babies! ;D Blue-Throated Bee Eater, Subic Canon 50D, EF 400mm f5.6L, Manfrotto 755XB/Gimbal Shot @ f5.6, 1/125", ISO160 Blue-Throated Bee Eater, Subic Canon 50D, EF 400mm f5.6L, Manfrotto 755XB/Gimbal Shot @ f5.6, 1/125", ISO160 Blue-Throated Bee Eater, Subic Canon 50D, EF 400mm f5.6L, Manfrotto 755XB/Gimbal Shot @ f5.6, 1/160", ISO160 To a bird buddy who gave Tina my cell number, you are a day's saver too! Thanks!

Lovely captures of this colorful bird, Toto...... excellent detail on the first and pleasing composition on the last. My last several visits to Subic last year was almost birdless..... the place isn't as it used to be.

Very nice captures. This bird is one of my favorites because of their vivid beautiful colors. Just one of the reasons why she is called Plain Idol Toto.

Subic is Tina's territory. She was the one who brought me to the Bee-eater colony. Its like a Disneyland for bird photographers. You have a choice of which one you would like to take a picture of because of their numbers. I noticed they are not as many as before, maybe its still early or some have not returned. I can see from your pictures that the birds were very active. It must have been a lot of fun for you. Well done Toto. Mabuhay.

Wonderful captures Toto. SO glad that you found the place. It was so nice to FINALLY meet you When I saw your car at Nabasan trail, I knew right away that you guys must be either bird watchers or bird photographers, when I saw the camera... that was it, I just had to ask if you are a member of the forum and lo and behold.... the rest is history. Good nalang I'm friendly kahit shy ako ;D I knew who to ask right away ... who else would be a reliable source of information when it comes to you guys who frequent the UP area except ... Tanan !!!!! ---> Doc Mando Thank you so much Doc Mando. I was lucky that weekend when it comes to the bird watching part. Bird photography wasn't so bad either but would have wanted to be able to take pictures of everything we saw. The highlight of that weekend was seeing the humongous aircraft carrier up close and personal. My first time to see 3 chinook helicopters and around 5 planes on top of a single ship. I couldn't take photos when we were near coz I was scared but was able to take photos when we were in the mountain already Hope to see you in the field again.

Tina truly owns Subic. She game me a Subic map with notes on the birding areas last November. Got myself coletos, white breasteds, king fishers and pigeons that time. Now, I want the bee eaters...

I thank you for being not shy coz I am shy ;D So we were in Nabasan Trail pala and that I dunno. I just try to go wherever there is road. We were able to find the colony easily as I recall that Bat Kingdom sign but your text message saved us a lot of hassle finding it. So it was Doc Mando pala. Thanks Doc! We went down bayfront and didnt mind the US Navy ship that was there and now it turned out to be a US Aircraft Carrier (sayang!) I just pass by the area thinking it was just another US navy ship coz everytime I go there there seem to be a US Navy ship docked in there. tsk sayang talaga! Hope to go back to the colony soon and hope to cross path with you in the field again!
