I was able to test the 1D Mark IV loaned to me by Canon. I am very impressed by the fast 10 fps and the fast auto focus. I was with Rey and we had the chance to bird with Romy and Nilo. The first 3 pictures are mine and the fourth one was taken by Romy. You can see why he is a head and shoulder above us. When someone shouted Cinnamon Bittern, Romy who was testing my gear for me at that time, took 14 shots of this bird. A very fast bird, at a distance of 31.3 meters. Canon 1DM4, EF 800mm f5.6 IS L Lens, Manfrotto 475B Tripod, MF 373 Gimbal Head. Common Sandpiper, Actitis hypoleucos. ISO 400, 1/400, f8 Bean bag on car window. Yellow Bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis) ISO 400, 1/800, f13 Bean bag on car window. Striated Grassbird (Megalurus palustris) ISO 400, 1/1000, f11 Bean bag on car window. This picture is full frame. Cinnamon Bittern or Chestnut Bittern (Ixobrychus cinnamomeus)ISO 400, 1/1600, f5.6 Tripod with gimbal head.

Very nice set, Ely.... love the reflection in the first! Looks like you're sold on this superbody, rightly so as it's the fastest DSLR I've ever fired, with great IQ to boot.

May I announce that I am buying the 1dMk4 next week together with the 800mmL and 600mmL. Oh, and also the Gitzo tripod paired with an original Wimberley.
I will be buying lotto tickets tomorrow.

I think it is a super bird camera. The AF's target acquisition is so darn fast and sticks like glue to the subject and to top it all, it has excellent IQ. I think Ely will have the ultimate birding combo, 1D4 with 800 5.6.

Thank you Romy, Ding, Toto, Paolo, Bob, Rey, Dennis, Edu, Ariel, & Clem for your appreciation and encouragement. I have not bought the camera yet. I definitely do want to have one because of its quality features and outstanding performance. But I have to do it with proper care and procedure and not on impulse. Romy had to go thru a lot when he bought his 7D which was okay when he tested it in the store but had some problems that did not show right away until it was tested in the field. I can imagine the difficulties and anxiety that he had to go thru to get his camera replaced. It was good that Canon gave him a service unit to use and it ended up with all is well that ends well when his new 7D was delivered after 1 month of waiting. The good news is the camera is now working the way it should. As exciting as it is to have a new camera it is not like in the States and other countries you can return the unit if you are not happy with it within 30 days. There is no such practice here. Romy has always been helpful in giving me his personal and invaluable suggestions I have always listened to him and followed his advice. I will continue to do so. Will share the good news with you guys if I am able to buy it. Mabuhay.

Ely, fantastic set. The IQ on these pics is good. Great IQ plus fast focusing and great ISO performance = run don't walk to your 1DMk4. Then you can add a TC to your 800mm and still autofocus!

Great series, Ely. WOW, 1D Mk4. Wow Ely! Great set. Hmm, I smell a new camera soon! (Will you be retiring your 5d? ) Thank you William & Adri. All you guys are so supportive of my purchasing a 1D. As soon as I am able to get one, I am going birding to see if I can do better with it. I still need a back up camera so I will be keeping the 5D for now.
