Last weekend I had the chance to visit the Philippine Eagle Center to see our national pride again and as well as check out our resident avian friends. There wasn't as many birds as I expected (according to one of the employees, the trees have not started bearing fruits yet) but this black, blue, and white beauty was more than a treat for me. While the unnatural perch is making me want to hate to call this a real photo-lifer, this little buddy was the reason I had to return the next day (as I only got documentary shots the previous day) and endure a two-hour wait in an uncomfortable sitting position, so I guess I'll take this as a keeper. I'm just happy it showed up. Silvery Kingfisher ( Alcedo argentata), endemic to Southern parts of the Philippines, vulnerable PEC, Malagos, Davao, 31 Jan 2010 40D + 400 f/5.6 L, ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/60 sec, manual exposure, manual focus, liveview, tripod/ballhead support, cable release, cropped, 6.5 meters from subject

Excellent capture Mark. You are exactly at the distance in which all wildlife should be from me.

Thanks a lot, Godo, Al, Paolo, and Rey. Much appreciated. @paolo I presume 6.5m is your artillery's closest targeting distance?

Thats a great shot. I will take that anytime. Of course it would have been perfect with a nice perch. There is always a next time that could be better so don't despair. Well done Mark. Mabuhay.

Fantastic capture, Mark!
I will be in Davao to attend a wedding in April. But I decided to just fly in and out, completely forgetting that I could've swung by Malagos if I stayed over. I'm now kicking myself.

Thank you, Sylvia, Ding, and Bert! Sylvia Ramos and Ding The bird is a resident of the area so I guess there's a good chance of capture if anyone visits. Actually, at one time, I saw two of them on the same perch. @bert I'm entertaining thoughts of going back before my return to Manila, but it doesn't look feasible with my schedule. I hope you get a chance to go there when you're in Mindanao.
