I left very early this morning hoping to capture the elusive Quetzal of Central America. I made a mistake of not following a tourist bus in the area as I failed to see any single Quetzal on my own. About an hour later, a tourist told me that they were able to see sevaral pairs of Quetzales on the same spot where I saw their bus . I had to settle taking photos of hummies and birds on site. This experience will certainly make me crave to go back to that place. I will appreciate if anyone can identify these as my booklet has not enough IDs.. 400mm f/5.6L, 1/2000s ISO800, Manfrotto 055MF4+GH 400mm f/5.6L, 1/800s ISO400, Manfrotto 055MF4+GH 400mm f/5.6L, 1/250s ISO800, Manfrotto 055MF4+GH

Hopefully Neon will see your pictures. He is good in bird ID asides from a lot of other things. You should give those Quezal another try. It is reputed to be one of the most beautiful birds in the world. These are good pictures of good looking birds. Well done Ariel. Mabuhay.

Ariel, the first photo is possibly that of a Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus) The second and third is that of a Long-tailed Silky Flycatcher (Ptilogonys caudatus).
Great photos by the way!
My wife and I are thinking of visiting Costa Rica but we're still hedging on the idea. Any advice?

I will not stop until I get that perfect picture of Quetzal The place is only about 90kms from where I live. The road leading to that place has an average altitude of around 2300 to 2500 mts above sea level (according to my Suunto watch) and its one of the highest places in CR. It was still dark when I reached the entrance going up to the mountain highway and I waited a bit to climb because of thick fog that rendered the visibility to just a few meters...I arrived at San Gerardo at past 7am, good enough to take these photos..I will post more in the days to come.

I highly recommend this place San Gerardo de Dota. There are nice hotels in the area and the most popular are Savegre Mountain Lodge and Dantica. Plenty of birds to see including the Quetzales. Try to check on the webistes about Savegre www.savegre.co.cr
