after a few takes, found out that somehow focusing on the eyes provides better focus. the reach of the 500 is liberating but it takes longer reach to get close to these shorebirds at the coastal lagoon. so did some compositions instead. nikon d200 + reflex nikkor 500/8 aperture priority, iso 640, mf 190 tripod + mf 393 gimbal head peatci compound coastal lagoon, dim overcast conditions, 02-24-2008 this lens still eludes me... so will do an indoor focus test with flash and perhaps learn its focusing nuances much better.

on our way out of the coastal lagoon, TJ and I did some sniping whilst inside his Pajero. bolted on the 80-400VR then.... in comparison, using the 80-400's AF and VR was a breeze... it is also tack sharper than the 500/f8 nikon d200 + 80-400VR/f3.5-5.6, aperture priority @ f8, iso400, handheld

I was trying out the 200-400mm f4 VR with the Nikon 2X TC. I always hear that the 2X TC degrades the IQ, and I guess the overcast conditions didn't help. I have yet to try this combo in ideal lighting conditions. Nikon D80, 200-400mm f4 VR, 2X TC, Tripod Mounted, Jobu Design Black Widow Gimbal Head ISO 800, f10, 1/60, 800mm My focus is just off with this shot! Nikon D80, 200-400mm f4 VR, 2X TC, Tripod Mounted, Jobu Design Black Widow Gimbal Head ISO 800, f10, 1/320, 600mm

Thanks Romy and JP. Yes, the lure of the extra focal length is too strong to ignore. I've heard of good output with the 2xTC as well, so it's a matter of getting the right settings and an ideal lighting situation. I'd like to go back this weekend and just try shooting from the car since that allowed a closer distance to the subjects.

thanks bobby, romy and jp. the 500/f8 still needs to be mastered. quite unfortunate that though i was in anvaya yesterday, weather wasn't cooperating as well. nice set tj. it was really "dark" then.
