A recent trip to Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, Ca gave us some nice views of four species. One of which, the King Eider, is a rarity. Birders from as far as San Diego came to see this bird. King Eider - juvenile male 40D, 100-400@380mm, ISO-320, 1/500, f8, handheld The Eider has landed - the bird is almost always swimming but we were lucky that it came ashore for a short while. Red-throated Loon - nonbreeding plumage 5D2, 700mm, ISO-320, 1/640, f9, tripod A Loon at Last - it's been a while since we last saw a loon. Brant Goose 40D, 100-400@400mm, ISO-320, 1/640, f9, handheld You make me feel Brant new - another species we haven't seen in a while Mew Gull 40D, 100-400@400mm, ISO-320, 1/1000, f11, handheld My Gull, talking about my gull - a lifer!

Great set Bob. It looks like you got quite close to three of them with your 100-400. It must be nice to photograph birds in the US. Lots of interesting subjects and quality looks. Thanks for sharing. It makes me think that we should visit our daughters and bring our cameras.

Thanks, Edu, Tukayo, Tins and Ely for your kind comments. Tonji Ramos, by all means come visit the USA. Birds are more approachable here. If you come to Southern California by February, I'll be happy to show you around.

Thanks for the offer to show us the birds Bob. We will probably be in the San Francisco area but we are not sure of the date. We will probably just stay in the SF area and may not reach your area. But if you come by the Phils again send me a message as I am always eager to go birding.
