Sylvia and I went to La Mesa Jan.2 with Ely and Ding. I want to thank Ding for taking us and wasting his precious time taking us around the Dam. The boat that took us around was new, clean, fast and stable. It was a great ride. I love being on the water and that was a great treat for me. Another great treat was getting our first lifer for the year. This was the best way to start our birding year, a rare lifer, the now famous Grey-Headed Fish Eagle of La Mesa. I hope it means we will have lots of lifers for this year. This is a very shy and wary bird that did not want us to get close. It was always flying away. I just set my speed at 1/1600 when we were taking it so I would be ready to shoot it as it flew off. I used my 5d mk2 and 100-400. Excellent series on this handsome raptor, Tonji! I wonder though what took you so long to share the pics, given that this was your first lifer last year (2009)? Hehehe.... just kidding, I know it's a typo, it happens to all of us every new year. ;D Sylvia and I went to La Mesa Jan.2 with Ely and Ding. Thanks guys. Its nice to start the year with a lifer and such an interesting one to boot. I do hope we see lots of new birds this year. We just came back from the Mt. Province and had a lot of fun taking bird pics in the cold weather.

Thanks Dennis. The boat captain called this bird white feet eagle. He-he. I've been trying to "educate" Guerrero, the boat captain. I like him. He's a good and simple man. Everytime we see a bird, I tell him the name but he just can't seem to recall, probably because the name's in English. He'd always refer to the birds as lawin (hawk) for the Osprey, mahabang leeg (long neck) for the Purple Heron, makulay (colorful) for the Blue-tailed Bee-eater, kalapati (pigeon) for the Pink-necked Green Pigeon (and other pigeons), kilyawan for the Black-naped Oriole. Since the Grey-headed Fish-Eagle's a new one, he, at least, attempted to name it: White-feet Eagle!

But I do love how Guerrero can spot a motionless little heron from over 20meters and in the bushes! He has eagle-eyes!
