Rey, Edu, and I saw a pair of adult GHFE lurking in the canopy. The boat was still quite far so we asked the pilot to go past it, make a U-turn that would bring us closer to shore and approach the birds, as if we were just passing by so as not to spook them. Alas, as we were excitedly doing this maneuver, the birds flew away. Managed to fire a short burst: One bird went deep into the forest while the other got on the thermal updraft and circled higher and higher. These are the only clear shots I got: I know Edu got only some blurred shots. I hope Rey's luckier. But, now, I have a rough idea where these birds usually stay and the time they start to soar. Must also be a family since the first batch saw an immature (also saw one last Jan). Hope this whets your appetites, ELy, JP, Tonji, & Syvia! Hope this

Cool. That bird will be a lifer for us! Hopefully the first for 2010!
I wonder if I should bring two rigs. One with the 400 the other with the 100-400. Hmmmm.

It sounds exciting. This will be my a real test for me in using the 300mm. I have tried using it but its really insignificant if I compare it with the 800mm. I hope we will be able to take the birds full frame so that there won't be any significant difference. Heh heh heh.

Do you have a TC you can pair with it? Which 300mm do you have? Could you pair it with a 2X and still get AF?

Ely on my 300/2.8L IS I often attach a Extender 1.4x and a camera body like a 40d/50d/7d for the 1.6x crop. With such a setup you end up having a camera that's 672mm at f/4.0. With the Extender 2.0x that Ding mentioned your camera turns into a 960mm at f/5.6. But autofocus speed and image quality reduces. On a 5D Mark II a 300 + Extender 1.4 = 420mm f/4 and 300 + Extender 2.0 = 600mm f/5.6. In my experience a 300 on a camera like the 5D Mark II is very useful for sport photography like futbol farm3.static.flickr.com/2575/4108911258_b50f01a52a_b.jpgOn a sidenote I hope Canon may one day make a 600mm f/5.6 or a 500mm f/5.6. It would weigh about 2-3kg and 1.5-2.5kg respectively.

I have a 300mm f2.8 and you can use a 1.4, 2, and combine both TC and still have auto focus. However as I have been warned by Romy, the IQ would be affected but if you use the 1.4 TC only it would still be okay.
