We could not resist going for a quick birding trip to Candaba today. We ended up getting 5 photo lifers. This is one of them. A Mallard. The Kennedy guide says its "accidental." I was scanning a big flock of floating ducks with my bins when I saw a bigger fellow stand out due to the size and the green head. It was really far, thank goodness for all of the 21 mega pixels of our cameras. I think we needed every single one. I just converted this straight from the DPP. No photo shop stuff except for watermark and name. Sylvia has more pics and may add more later. Mallard Anas platyrhynchosCanon 5dMk2, 500mm f4, 1.4x tc, tripod ISO 160, 1/800, f7.1

Congrats on the find sir! When we (me, gabs, docmando and bert) went there, we met a few foreigners who already told us they saw mallards. We could not confirm though because at that time they were so far!

Wow.... congrats on the Mallard, Tonji! Hope there are a number of them, and they'd stay for a while.

Thanks Edu, Romy and Ely. The birds were far and I did try to scan for more birds but I only saw one Mallard. Lots of male Northern Shovelers. Hopefully there are a few more in other groups.

I just remembered now, aside from the Mallard, the guy said he also saw spot-billed ducks.

Edu, I think that was Tim F. you saw.
Thanks Ariel, I am sure you can spot it. It is very different from the other ducks.

Here's another picture of the Mallard: iso 400, f11, 1/320, tripod, canon 5dmkII, 300 mm, 1.4x + 2x When we were inspecting all the ducks, we kept in mind the email Tim Fisher had sent to the WBCP earlier this month about an seeing a Mallard, Chinese Spot Billed Duck, and female Wigeon in Candaba. It was Tim's first time to see the Mallard and Spot Billed Duck in the Philippines! Hope someone gets to photograph the Spot Billed Duck next!
