I tried out my 40D with ISO 800 - 1600 Shots. I had noise problems before, till I set to "Disable" the "Highlight Tone Priority" in Custom Fuctions! Here's a sample at ISO 1600:Another at 1600:Here's one at ISO 800 This is my experience. If you find it interesting, try it out. :-)

Excellent demo of high ISO capability of today's sensors, Bobby!
I can remember not too long ago when ISO 400 film was as grainy as Saharan sand dunes. Now, ISO 400 is as clean as a whistle, and when the exposure is done right, ISO 800-1600 are very decent.

Very interesting. I've got to try this soon. No noise reduction software on this shots?

I only used the built-in NR of CS2 and set it to the minimum - just for my peace of mind. The bare shots do show very little noise, but that said, incorporating NR in CS2 to my work-flow when using Hi-ISO isn't too much. The thing is that, with a little NR, the results are still very acceptable. :-)

Interesting. I guess you shoot in JPEG? Probably no effect if you shoot in RAW?

On the 40D, enabling HTP when shooting jpeg will result into more recovered highlights at the expense of noisier shadows. If one shoots RAW, it doesn't matter whether HTP is on/off, as one can over-ride the "as-shot" settings during conversion. However, when HTP is on, ISO 100 and 3200 are not settable.
Another setting which I don't enable is the High ISO NR, as I can simply do this during conversion, and thus not sacrifice my buffer capacity.

Yes, I do shoot in JPEG, mainly because my Picassa Software, which is my downloader and first step in my work-flow, can't handle RAW files. Also, I just don't like the Canon UI in DPP, but that's just me. :-)

I have the updated Picassa 2.7, but it can handle only the 400D RAW Files - it does not recognize the 40D RAW images as yet. Is there some plug-in I need for this to work properly? I'm gonna surf the net for it. :-)

My version is 2.7 but it may be the latest build (Build 37.02,0) because it can handle 40D raw files. You need to download directly from the Picasa site.
