I went to the golf course yesterday afternoon not to play but to look for some 12-15 Black-naped Orioles that were feeding on a tree that has worms on some of its leaves. It was a birdnuts' delight situation where you can see so many birds of the same kind eating from the same tree at the same time. Unfortunately they were no longer there. Maybe the worms have all been eaten. My consolation is a pair of Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata), also known as Barred Ground Dove who were busy eating grass and worms on the ground. Canon 5DM2, EF 800mm F5.6 IS L Lens, Manfrotto 475B Tripod, MF 373 Gimbal Head Both pictures taken with ISO 800, 1/100, f8

Wow! Really up close shots of the Zebra Dove...great low angle , too! Cool shots, Ely! Thank you Bob. That will be the norm now for birds that you can creep up to. Got to bring extra shirts and pants to change to after this kind of shooting. Bob, I know you like monkeys but please change you Avatar. You look a lot better than that. Heh heh heh.

Wow! What a shot! How low were you Ely? Thank you Paolo. I know you are partial to this kind of shots. Some of the shots I was on the ground but kneeling. Next time time I plan to shoot them prone on the ground. Our Chief Maestro wants me to do it that way and I agree with him. I will try to take it with no depth of field before and after the bird or the area surrounding the bird but still have a bokeh at the back. Try the same angle so we can compare, and lets see how it comes out. Mabuhay.

Great set Ely. Love the low angle, a little bit lower and you will be able to melt the foreground details but you will have to do it with the position you're planning to do next.

The way I did my low angle shot was reckless as I could've dropped my camera from being off balanced. I should've used the chair pillows in the lanay for support instead of hand holding at such a risky position. If I were presented with the same situation again I'd spread my tripod legs apart to get as low as possible. Camera would be below a foot above the ground. As for the depth of field for subjects like doves at 6-7 meters I'd stop down to f/8 or f/11 to get the whole bird in focus while still maintaining an out of focused background. With Edward the bat I had to stop down to f/16 to get 3/4ths of him in focus @ 6-6.1 meters. Anything further away and shooting at f/5.6 or f/8 would be better. I hope I could hit the birding trail by next month when peak season ends. ;D ;D

Great set Ely. Love the low angle, a little bit lower and you will be able to melt the foreground details but you will have to do it with the position you're planning to do next. I have been getting a lot of tips on how to do this properly. I will try it out on the next opportunity that I get. Thanks Rey. Mabuhay.

Thank you to all of you, Edu, Bong, Den, Toto, Bong N. Nestor and my youngest friend Don. I appreciate all your nice comments. At one time I saw the thread being read 29 times and not a single comment. I could only surmised that its such a common bird that there was really nothing to reply to. I realize now that not everyone is an early riser and a lot of you guys sleep late. It is just fortunate for me that I did not delete the thread otherwise I would not have seen all the beautiful comments made by you people. Toto you just gave me an idea. Next time I am going to try use my Macro and see how the bird will look like. Wish me luck. Mabuhay.

Love the detail and low angle, Ely! Romy, I owe it to you that you taught me how to shoot birds at a low angle. I look funny wearing those knee & elbow pads but the pictures are worth it even I am funny looking. Thank you for the valuable lesson and as you can see I am a very obedient student. I am waiting for further instructions from the Maestro. Mabuhay.
