Today, fellow PBPF members Bert M., Doc Mando and I, and UP Mountaineer Freddie went to Ipo River and Watershed to bird. On our way back to the entrance while we were aboard a motorized banca, we came across what the folks there, particularly our guide/banca pilot, thought as the Philippine Eagle as it is huge. Based on our documentary pics and the Kennedy Field Guide, however, we are in a consensus that the eagle is actually a Grey-Headed Fish-Eagle. The Kennedy Field Guide says that the Grey-Headed Fish-Eagle is "Rare," while our PBPF Philippine Bird List says it's "Near-Threatened." Here are the documentary pictures that I have taken. Hope the pictures of Bert and Mando are better than these. All taken with Canon 50D + EF 400mm + 2-pounder weights/dampener (Toto's 2-pounder rice).... handheld, aboard a motorized banca in the middle of impounded/dammed water. Can the experts please confirm our ID? Thanks!

Fantastic! It's good to know that the GHFE is well and good in that area. Got that bird, too, some two years back but mine was much less clear than yours. Will have to go back there!

That must have been quite an experience. I don't have a single eagle on my file. Well done Alain. Mabuhay.

Hi Alain, Congratulations on the capture, I was with Ding when we had the excursion to the site , it's a beautiful site, although i remembered it rained that day with lousy skies. So balik tayo doon!! Sama ako!! Here my image of the GHFE taken there. March 2007 as I notice there is a slight color difference with your bird, baka immature? or just the bad contrast in my pic with the white skies? FYI also saw I think i saw an immature at Subic a about years back but has not seen it since. September 2008 Regards Chito

Thanks Martin, Sylvia, Elvin, and Doc Chito!
Yes, Doc Chito, it looks like my pictures are that of an immature eagle, while yours and Ding's are that of a mature one. The guide said there are two eaqgles and a nest!
Yes, let's go back there. Maybe Ding can arrange it or Bert can organize one again. He he he!
