Two days after Mark and I got our 400s, I was able to test fire it at the University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus, in the company of Toto, Godo, Doc Mando, Bert, and Jun Or., and then later with William, Gabs, Christian, Bong and Adri. Here are the first pictures that I got with the 400 prime: Canon 50D + Canon EF 400 L USM + Benro Tripod and Gimbal... 1/640, f5.6, iso320 Canon 50D + Canon EF 400 L USM + Benro Tripod and Gimbal... 1/250, f5.6, iso640 Canon 50D + Canon EF 400 L USM + Benro Tripod and Gimbal... 1/500, f5.6, iso320 Canon 50D + Canon EF 400 L USM + Benro Tripod and Gimbal... 1/320, f5.6, iso800 Canon 50D + Canon EF 400 L USM + Benro Tripod and Gimbal... 1/250, f5.6, iso400 Canon 50D + Canon EF 400 L USM + Benro Tripod and Gimbal... 1/400, f5.6, iso320 Canon 50D + Canon EF 400 L USM + Benro Tripod and Gimbal... 1/200, f5.6, iso320 Canon 50D + Canon EF 400 L USM + Benro Tripod and Gimbal... 1/250, f5.6, iso400 Canon 50D + Canon EF 400 L USM + Benro Tripod and Gimbal... 1/200, f5.6, iso320

Wow great captures in all Alain!!
Liked the pose of the Barbet and BRT!!
Was the first BS photo a long shot? from my point of view the foreground branch is a little bit sharper. But most other shots are sharp and looks like you have a winner there!!

Great debut set of your 400 Alain. I didn't know we were in a debut party that time. You got a sharp piece of glass.

Thanks so much Toto, Neon, Gabs, Edu, Paolo, Ely, William and Tina! Thanks for appreciating.
Neon, hese pictures were all taken with AF and normal shutter click. I have actually noticed that the AF is not always on target, sometimes the foreground or the background is much sharper than the subject.
But I'm still testing it... so far, MF is better, and using Liveview and remote is best! Will also test Toto's two-pounder rice for the next birding sortie... and BIFs are next!

I have actually noticed that the AF is not always on target, sometimes the foreground or the background is much sharper than the subject. I really believe it has to do with our 50D Alain and our lenses could be just fine. I dunno what really causes it as it is still happening from time to time even with my 2-pound "rice" bag. I have learned to accept the problems of the 50D nowand this is a very minor issue for me now. The major one is still the BIF on a busy background. I have yet to nail my first BIFs on a busy background

Many thanks to Ka Mastah, Bong, Den and Olan. Thanks for appreciating!
Toto, are you suggesting we move forward to 7D or we take a back step by switching to 40D?
Any guys here who have 40D and a 400mm setup rig? Do you have these same/similar issues with the 50D+400mm combi?

Toto, are you suggesting we move forward to 7D or we take a back step by switching to 40D? Hahah. Not really! No funds yet for a 7D. If I have, I would have already haha. But I think 50D, with 400mm f5.6, is more than capable with only one glaring weakness (BIF on busy BG). For now, I'll stick to it! ;D

All excellent shots and a great first-time use of the trusty 400mm workhorse! Guys, the 50D is an excellent tracker - you just have to know when to "pump" the shutter at the right time. This was taken with a 50D, and it's a tough one: So were these shots - not so hard, but it shows how the 50D can track too:

Thank you, Bobby, for the appreciation and for the encouragement on the 50D! I guess we still have to tame the 50D.... not the 400mm. He he he!

This is a great debut set. The lens looks like a real winner. The 2nd BRT and the 1stCB and the 1st PT are my favorites. Congrats on the great new glass.
I really like the lens hood of the 400 f5.6. Its easier to use than the lens hood of the 100-400, 300 2.8 and the 500. I wish all the lens hoods were that design. It would make for faster shooting.
