Dear gang, I've sent a RAW file of a Collared Kingfisfer from a production 7D to a couple of birdnuts, so they can play around with it in DPP and check IQ/noise. I'm also posting the download link here, it's good for 7 days or 100 downloads, so others can check it out too. Shooting info - 7D + 500 f4 IS + Canon 1.4x TC, ISO 400, f/7.1, 1/640 sec, bean bag, RAW file size - 22.938 MB. Download link: www.yousendit.com/download/TzY3RkJVQXA1UjdIRGc9PQIf you download it, and have played around with it, feel free to post your impressions on IQ and noise on this thread. For those without the latest DPP converter yet, here's a link to Canon USA's download site (you have to put in your OS before the DL links are activated). Note that this DPP download is an updater, meaning you must have installed an older version of DPP in you machine for it to work. www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=325&modelid=19356

Wooohooo!!something to play with!! PPed with my usual work flow, no NR applied. With FF shot the noise is barely noticeable but once you crop the noise becomes more evident. Applied USM on the bird. re-sized FF to 96dpi 18x12" 1728x1152 Cropped for composition 96dpi 15x12", 1440x1152

Hi Romy How does the production unit of 7D AF perform with the EF500mm, 400mm f5.6 and 100-400mm lenses for BIF?

The Noise at stated ISO (640) is quite acceptable for my taste, actually. I did not do any noise reduction in RAW using DPP, but when I cropped the image as shown (100 percent), I had to do a single Noise Ninja pass in JPEG, and even then, it was pretty low (Chroma - 14, Luma - 15). Aside from doing color balance adjustments, the scene was superbly handled by the camera, and photographer, of course. One thing I noticed is that the resulting image does not take kindly to even moderate sharpening (part of my workflow) in Paintshop Pro X2. The image is already very sharp in this case anyway: No HSM adjustments: With HSM and very small sharpening:

Woohoo!! 1 more!! Save for the HDV issues Ka Mastah posted earlier, with these fine grained noise on ISO 800 it looks like a winner to me!! Adjusted the BG levels to make the noise more pronounced.

Working with the 7D ISO 800 files is a sort of disappointment to me. I had to do some RAW de-noising before other PP work was possible. Chroma -6 and Luma -4 (not too bad, but needed), on DPP. Here's my result with only de-noising and no sharpening: In PSPX2, working on JPEG, I found the noise to be still obtrusive, and had to use Noise Ninja again (Luma-7, Chroma-6) to get a more acceptable result. Further PP, including Color Balancing, some sharpening, SHM, and cropping at 100% gave me this output: With an adjustment layer to improve saturation, contrast, and sharpening: Honestly, I expected Canon to do better than this. I mean, it IS supposed to be an UPGRADE, isn't it?

Hi Romy How does the production unit of 7D AF perform with the EF500mm, 400mm f5.6 and 100-400mm lenses for BIF? William, I only tried the production 7D at BIFs with the 400 2.8 IS + Canon 1.4x TC, and AF is very much like my 1D2 - amazing. Santi cut short my field testing. At static birds, the 500 f4 + 1.4x TC focuses very accurately.

Neon's and Bobby's contrasting comments are a microcosm of what's happening in various photo forums - people are split whether the IQ and noise of the 7D are good or not. And this is considering that the same photograph is being discussed! For my taste (and everyone's mileage might vary), the last Canon xxD camera with pixel level noise acceptable to me was the 40D. This is the reason I skipped the 50D. The 7D's shadow noise at mid-ISOs will limit me in doing aggressive PP work, particularly pushing the shadows and pulling the highlights (a common thing to do in no-flash bird photography). For bigger pixel lovers like me, I guess we're left with no options than to look at 5DMx and 1Dxx bodies in the future. Seems Canon's design thrust in xxD and xxxD bodies is to cram more MP in tiny sensors. Woohoo!! 1 more!! Wanted these images too to go through the process so here are my versions. Noise is kind of acceptable for me as it is very much comparable with my 50D. No noise reduction for me.

Superb renditions as well, Toto!
Hehe.... this thread shows that even if each of us starts with exactly the same ingredient (RAW files), the cooked food vary in taste, texture, aroma and color, after these have gone through each chef's individual workflow!!!

On the other hand, the 7D's AF is superbly faster than any current xxD camera, so it is still a worthy upgrade, specially when the price starts to drop to a more xxD level. ;-)

I think we can arrange a 7-day full exchange warranty with CMPI (to make sure you get a good copy). ;D ;D ;D

Noise Reduction applied-nil. Can`t get rid of that orangy color on branch/breast...too much saturation might be. My version;

Really, If I had the opportunity to shoot as many birds as you guys in Luzon do, I'd seriously consider it - besides, the 50D is good enough for my use at this time. Ka Mastah, that 7-day return/exchange policy is a great idea! I sure hope somebody will take the plunge! :-)
