I couldn't believe my luck when Tina called to say that there was a pair of very people-friendly Java Sparrows in UP! I had never seen a Java Sparrow before and I really, really wanted to see one. Turns out, I had been looking in the wrong places. I thought these birds hung out in long grass, like munias. This was a very memorable lifer for me .. I got to watch them for a long time exhibiting all kinds of behavior: perching, preening, flying, nesting, dancing, and mating! It was also great to see Prop Jerry, Doc Mando, Neon, Ely, Martin, and of course Tina and Tonji. Thanks Prop and Doc for helping us out! I was also trying out the 2x with the 300mm. Great shots on your 300mm with 2x. Now I know why you said that this lens is a lot better than what you were using before. Well done Sylvia. Mabuhay.

All very nice Sylvia, that 300 2.8 IS is one of the sharpest lenses on the planet, even a 2x TC can't touch it!

I love that 2nd shot! Peeeerfect! Now it seems the 300mm 2.8 such an excellent cheaper option in addition to getting the bigger guns!

Thank you so much for all the compliments! SO heart-warming to read all these wonderful replies! Yup Toto, cheaper and lighter. I was worried at first about how the 300 would perform as a birding lens. I think a lot of people use it for shooting sports. But, since couldn't imagine myself carrying around anything much heavier or bigger than my old set-up, the 300 made a lot of sense for me.
