I hope you guys are willing to look at MORE Red Keeled Flowerpeckers, Common Kingfishers, and Black Winged Stilts from Batangas! I was also there with Tonji, Tina, JP and Martin and I was also trying out new glass for the first time! Red Keeled Flowerpecker iso 100, f6.3, 1/100 The aratiles fruit looked too big to fit in the bird's mouth. It turns out that the bird gives the fruit a big squeeze first before eating it. iso 100 f4, 1/200 Common Kingfisher iso 100, f5, 1/125 Black Winged Stilt This was in San Juan, Batangas Canon 50d, Canon 300mm 2.8, Canon 1.4 tc, tripod

Great set Sylvia. Congrats on the new glass, said to be one of the the sharpest made by Canon. This glass can take 2X TX quite well, then you've got a super light 600 5.6 that's still got good IQ.

Hi JP, Tina, Rey, Ely, Paolo and Edu! Thank you for the nice comments! Woo hoo Tina! Ely -- I'm very happy with the lens! When we were in San Juan, I was walking around with a tripod and it felt quite manageable. I think having 2 straps, one on the body and one on the lens also helps a bit. The whole rig feels more balanced and less like dead weight hanging down my neck! I really think I'll still be able to walk around somewhat comfortably with this lens, maybe with a monopod instead of a tripod if it's a long walk. I was worried about moving from a 400 to a 300, but as Rey pointed out, it's a very sharp lens and can even take a 2x tc well. I don't have a 2x yet, just a 1.4x. I think my new combination is a big improvement over the 100-400 and well worth the extra bit of weight.

Hi syl how does your 300 + 1.4x compare to your 400/5.6L in terms of image quality?

Beautiful set, Sylvia and congrats on the new glass, one of the sharpest. Try a 2x TC on it.

Thank you!! Heee heee heee! William -- Yup, looking forward to trying out that combo! Paolo - the 300+1.4 tc is a LOT sharper! I haven't done any side by side testing, basing my opinions on 2 bird photography sessions. With this new lens, when I zoom in, I get shocked at how sharp a lot of the images are! With the old lens, a lot of the pics look fuzzy/blurry when you zoom in. The 300+1.4tc is definitely a LOT sharper.
