Hi Guys! This is a picture from the trip to Coron that Tonji and I took last month. We got a VERY pleasant surprise today when Des Allen (of WBCP) emailed us saying that this bird which we identified as a Black Naped Monarch was actually a Blue Paradise Flycatcher! Hoo hoo! Yipee! ;D An unexpected lifer via email! We were especially excited because this bird is an uncommon Philippine endemic. One telling difference between the 2 birds is the bill size. iso 800, f7.1, 1/60

Yes, I mis-ID'ed my BPFC too as a BNM and it languished in my HDD for two years before I discovered the error.... indeed, the ID clincher is the much larger bill. Congrats on the lifer!

Wow, another surprise from your Coron sortie!! Have you finished viewing all your shots from this sortie? There might be some more surprises hiding Yeah, at first look, it looks like a BNM but the larger bill size was the clincher that it's not. Congrats on another lifer!!

Its like a dream come true. The Yellow Bellied Fly Catcher that I ID turn out to be a Pygmy Flowerpecker. Thanks to Romy for the ID. This are the "Pleasant Surprises" in life that makes our day. I am happy for you & Tonji. Well done Sylvia. Mabuhay.

Cograts Sylvia - same thing with me. My BPF was finally ID'd by Steve Pryor when he saw it way back in March 2007, at my Flckr site! The bill is really what makes it identifiable as such :-)

Great catch there Sylvia. This is one of my targets when I came back to Coron. Although this bird is not very shy, it's still so hard to get a decent shot as it always stays under the dark canopy and at the same time will not stop jumping from one branch to another.

Thanks Martin, Bobby, and Rey! Rey -- it would have been my target too if I had known!! As it is, we saw two of them but really didn't pay much attention to them. I just grabbed a few shots to help me make my bird list. Hehe!
