Hi Guys! Here's a photo of the Philippine Hawk-Owl subspecies Ninox philippensis spilonota in Cebu. The spilonota race is shared with Camiguin Sur, Cebu, Sibuyan and Tablas. The spilonota race in Cebu is a possible new species of hawk owl and we are studying this species and compare it to other spilonota race. Hope to visit Tablas soon... Hi Martin,
Yap around 7pm just near Pedro's house. Btw CBCF's Alcoy research station now is open you can stay in our research station if planning to visit Cebu next time. Just inform us ahead of time so we can arrange it with our community partner.

Wow, its such a cool shot. Night picture and possibly a new species to boot. I really like owls but have not seen too many.
Is Cebu a good place to take photos? I have never gone birding there and would like to visit one day. When is the best time to go?
Thanks for sharing your great owl shot!

hello Godo, first of all congrats for this very rare shot, secondly its nice to hear you're pursuing a research on this bird because little is known of this cryptic species. And lastly, keep it up!

Tonji,
Hmmm Cebu its not that good compare to Palawan or Luzon but you can find endemic species found on in the island like Black Shama, Cebu Flowerpecker, Streak-breasted Bulbul, and other subspecies endemic in Cebu. Like our Barbet is different from your Barbet in Luzon same with Elegant Tit, Whistler and many more. And Cebu is unique from the rest of the West Visayas faunal region (Negros Panay) because of these endemic birds. If you want to visit here i'm sure you can get the Shama and other common species not sure about CFP. Just inform us if you want to visit Cebu.
Binot,
Thanks! Yap its not that common but there increasing in numbers. Before its rare and only few are calling but now we have several territories in Nug-as. I've been doing bird surveys in Visayas, Palawan and Mindanao for the past 7 yeasrs now. We are also conducting ecological study in Cebu for a almost a decade now with the Black Shama, Cebu Flowerpecker and now pursuing grad study on Streak Breasted Bulbul. Salamat!
