Is there anybody out there who uses Sigma 500mm f/4.5? How is it compared to Canon 400mm f5.6L? I saw from some websites that they are almost of the same price but how about image quality, built, etc?
I will appreciate any input.
tnx. ariel

AF was not as fast because the old-gen copy he had doesn't sport an HSM motor yet. I'd choose a used Sigma 500 f/4.5 over a 400 5.6L any time - longer reach plus equally sharp IQ. Just make sure what you're getting is the current DG model, or at worst the HSM-equipped model which is one generation older the current DG model. This is to make sure that it works with current DSLRs. Here are user reviews at FM: www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=131&sort=7&cat=38&page=2

Hi Ariel, JP's Sigma 500f4.5 (old version) is now part of my birding gear. I have been using the lens with a D700 with and without it's dedicated Sigma 1.4xtc. AF is not too slow without the TC and becomes a bit slower with the TC on in low light conditions. Using it bare as a 500mm gives me the best IQ as it should, and since shoot it side by side (many times already, just to compare) with a 50d+400f5.6L setup (my other rig), i would say that the lens delivers very good quality. The only problem is the weight, so the lens can never be shot handheld. It is either set on a good heavy duty tripod or rested on a bean bag to ensure fine quality output.
