.... is when you don't crop out and throw away a single pixel to improve composition. Looks like this combo is much better than the Sigmonster when shooting from my vehicle - almost as heavy, but shorter (easier to handle inside the car), closer MFD (3 m) and with stabilization. I lose the framing flexibility though. Long-tailed Shrike ( Lanius schach) Candaba wetlands, Philippines, August 11, 2009 5D2 + 400 2.8 L IS + Canon 2x TC, 800 mm, f/9, ISO 200, 1/250 sec, bean bag, uncropped full frame resized to 1200x800 And for those curious to see how IQ holds up when seen at the pixel level, here's a link to an uncropped full frame, 5616 x 3744 pixels saved as PS quality 9 jpeg, 1.387 MB file size: www.pbase.com/liquidstone/image/115998896/original

Wow, this lens is incredibly pixel sharp even with a 2X TC. Would love to see a comparison with the bare lens. I probably can't tell the difference.

Thanks folks! Wow, this lens is incredibly pixel sharp even with a 2X TC. Would love to see a comparison with the bare lens. I probably can't tell the difference. With a 2x TC and stopped down to between f/8 - f/11, I think the 400 2.8 still outresolves the 5d2 sensor..... so there's not a great difference compared to the bare lens in terms of sharpness. The bare lens will have better colors, contrast, bokeh and less CA though. Wow!! looks like the "Sigmonster" is relegated to a special Video lens from now on. ;D You're right Neon, the Sigmonster will rule on as a 300 - 1600 video lens. Also, at 1120 - 1600 mm still shots, my 500 f4 and 400 2.8 IS bow to the Sigmonster in terms of IQ. For 400-800 mm work at static birds, the 400 2.8 rules while the 500's turf is BIFs at 700 mm.

Thanks, Toto! Wooooooooow. This is where you see how perfection is just common! The 500 f4 IS seems to be getting jealous of its brighter brother, and has been nagging me since yesterday to post also one of its perched captures. Note that even at f/11, the DOF is still quite thin when shooting 700 mm this close (inside 25 feet). ;D ;D ;D Long-tailed Shrike ( Lanius schach) Candaba wetlands, Philippines, August 11, 2009 5D2 + 500 f4 IS + Canon 1.4x TC II, 700 mm, f/11, ISO 200, 1/400 sec, 475B/3421 support:

I have tried to catch up with what I have missed on the PBPF. I am glad that I did because there were so many things that I learned today. Your pictures are excellent. Well done Romy. Mabuhay.

Wow, Romy you have three 400mm, a 500mm and a 300-800mm. Its like having a Merc, a BMW, an Audi, a Porsche, and a Ferrari. What to drive..hmm what to drive?
Super shots by the way, both are really great. Congrats again on your new lens. Awesome.
