Wow.... very clean ISO 1600! Edu, I'm moving this to the Gear board, as the Review section is for more in-depth tests.

Thanks mastah for finding the right place for this. And thank you for the compliments on the ISO. I was also pleased with this, pretty decent noise handling at High ISO. I think I could still have adjusted the shutter for a clearer image (as the back is blown - according to my uncalibrated laptop screen). Thanks binot for the compliment! This D90 is a keeper for me. Will have to wait till Nikon comes up with something to rival the 400 5.6 L tho.. specially the price range.

You made me come out of my hibernation, hate you man. ;D On breaking my silence ... You didnt mention (or maybe Toto should jump in), how it was post-processed. Testing for high ISO, you don't usually do NR in PP. That's a nice posing egret though. I wish the legs were not chopped off though. Some blown out highlights ... the danger of shooting white birds, and especially that low SS and high ISO. I do agree though that the D90 is teeny weeny better at handling noise than the D300. Was this shot @ wide open? Used any support? Anyway, I just like to mention that I'm happy with the AFS 300 F4 with TC 1.4 (420mm @ f/5.6). A great entry-level birding rig. Keep shooting!

hi Ted and ahmm.. welcome back? well the shoot I did was intended for me to push the D90 to the limits particularly the High ISO handling. So I found myself birding in an unfamiliar place looking for a different target in setting s that I have always stayed away from. And this plain white subject under a shade is something that I otherwise would not have even dared to consider shooting. For the other settings, lens was at 5.6, handheld. yes there are blown highlights and the legs were cut off (cropped unintentionally during internet transfer) as whenever this pic travels the web between me and toto, it goes up to 99% then "error - file was not sent". Oh well we can't get them all . I personally like that there are blown highlights as I interpret this as that the D90 could have handled this at either a lower ISO or probably two stops faster. Not to undermine Toto's PP skills by saying I am sure there was no NR used during PP, but he has confirmed to me that there was no NR done. Sharpening and color adjustment mostly. I bugged him to PP this for me as my laptop's screen is not calibrated and blows highlights like they were in downtown Chicago. All in all, and considering I come from a D60, I am happy that the D90 allowed me to produce a better photo. AFS300 F4 you say eh? Nikon Club Philippines members get a few discounts here and there. Thanks Teddy for the compliments and I speak for everyone when I say we miss your lunch buddies. Edu

Hi Teddy, good day and you have been hibernating a lot ;D I am forced to do the same as I got no glass to use momentariliy lols! The situation I am in is killing me so I obliged when Edu bugged me to have this PP'd to the best that I could. He trusted my PP skills so much that he is now putting me on a hot seat. lols!!!
Kidding aside, though I didn't know the PP'd image is intended for testing D90's high ISO, the image sent to me for PP is already a testament of the D90's capability even without the PP.
The post processing done was actually very minimal when compared to the orig file. Edu should post the orig file i guess so we can see the difference.
I really can't recall if I applied NR on this image but seem not I guess as I dont apply NR usually on my images. But here is my usual PP workflow,
(1) resize first
(2) then curves. I did this to compensate exposure when an image is over/under exposed. was forced to use curves as the image sent to me was already a JPG.
(3) then some sharpening. I am fond of sharpening only selected areas so as not to introduce unnecessary noise in areas that dont need retouching.
